Hepatocellular carcinoma in Europe: opportunities and challenges

Ce dossier présente un ensemble d'articles concernant l'épidémiologie, l'étiologie et le traitement d'un carcinome hépatocellulaire en Europe ainsi que la surveillance des patients présentant un risque de développer la maladie

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the commonest primary liver cancer, causes over 50,000 deaths annually in Europe.1 A recent Lancet Commission stressed that addressing viral hepatitis, alcohol and the metabolic syndrome could reduce this burden.2 Hepatitis C treatment and hepatitis B vaccination are diminishing viral hepatitis as a cause of HCC in Europe, but this decline is being more than offset by the rising burden of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and persistently high rates of alcohol-related liver disease.1 Furthermore, migration from regions where viral hepatitis remains prevalent will continue to contribute to HCC incidence as native-born rates fall.1 The three papers in the Hepatocellular cariconoma in Europe Series in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, on epidemiology, surveillance, and systemic treatment, capture both the opportunities created by these shifts and the challenges Europe still faces.1,3,4
