Managing Metabolic Syndrome and Prostate Cancer

In the Original Investigation by Shaver et al, electronic health records of more than 16 000 men with prostate cancer and without metabolic syndrome in the prior 6 months were analyzed for the development of metabolic syndrome following initiation of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs). Data were obtained from what was collected as routine standard-of-care evaluations. Hypertension was the most common metabolic abnormality that they found, present in 83% of the population overall (95% CI, 82.4%-83.7%). The next most common abnormality that contributed to the definition of metabolic syndrome was dyslipidemia, which was present in 51.8% of the population (95% CI, 50.9%-52.6%). They found that 39% of men developed some element of metabolic syndrome within the first year following doublet therapy with ADT and ARPI.
