Small Cell Lung Cancer—A Neglected Disease With More Data Needed
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a poorly understood disease. Data about the epidemiologic factors, survival time, and molecular pathways of SCLC are needed to obtain a better understanding of the deadliest histologic type of lung cancer. Tseng et al1 provide a comprehensive approach to evaluating this disease using the Taiwan Cancer Registry with data from 2009 to 2018. Some key messages are clear from the results of the study. First, there has been a decrease in the incidence SCLC in the Taiwanese population since 2009, but the decrease was not observed among never-smokers with SCLC; second, there was little difference between never- vs ever-smoker survival, with a higher difference in men; third, never-smokers were slightly older compared with smokers; and fourth, overall survival was only 7.8 months.
