Although approximately 70% of women with early-stage invasive breast cancer are candidates for breast-conserving surgery, many need and some choose to undergo mastectomy because of the extent of malignant disease in the breast, previous exposure to radiotherapy, contraindications or desire to avoid radiotherapy, to reduce the risk of subsequent breast cancers, or a combination of these factors. Additionally, the number of unilateral mastectomies for cancer treatment has been decreasing while that of bilateral mastectomies has been rising
