Nutritional Status As a Prognostic Indicator for Pediatric Malignancies

Although malnutrition is frequently cited as a poor prognostic indicator for pediatric oncology patients, nutritional status is infrequently evaluated as a component of clinical trials. Malnutrition has been used interchangeably with undernutrition or protein-energy malnutrition. It is now recognized that there is another end of the spectrum—that is, patients who are obese. The majority of pediatric oncology studies that have reported on an impact of nutritional status on outcomes have only evaluated patients at diagnosis. They did not report on the nutritional changes that occur during treatment and that may have an effect on outcomes.
